VMware has expanded its presence in cloud based computing market with the launch of its new Cloud Foundry project.
VMware’s open source application platform for the cloud will enable the company to lower the barriers for the adoption of cloud based computing, according to Jerry Chen, Senior Director of Cloud and Application Services at VMware.
"Cloud Foundry is about expanding a PaaS engine across multiple clouds, frameworks and application services," he said. The Cloud Foundry will work with the company’s vFabric, which was launched in August
2010 as a set of application services for the cloud.
Chen also explained that the open source initiative will be operated under an Apache open source license. The company made it an open source project in order to encourage participation and innovation.
VMware is planning to build a commercial product based on Cloud Foundry but it did not announce any time frame for the product. The open source version is now available in as a beta at CloudFoundry. org
