Japanese scientists have reached a great milestone in the field of science by creating a tooth by using stem cells and transplanting it in the mice mouth. This unique experiment has brought a ray of hope of creating complex organs by using stem cells.
It has been revealed that for the experiment the Japanese scientists extracted adult stem cells from the foetal mice and placed it in a mouse’s kidney to grow. After two months, the cells took the form of tooth with bone and ligaments. Soon the tooth was transplanted into a mouse’s mouth. During the study, it was reported that the transplanted tooth within six weeks got engaged with its blood and nerve system.
Commenting upon the experiment, Associate Professor David Leavesley from the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at Queensland University of Technology said, “This shows that you can actually create a mature organ replacement in an artificial situation and then transplant it to become a functional tissue integrated with the recipient. That's never been done before as far as I'm aware”.
Moreover, the experiment suggests that stem cells can be used for the patients who lost their teeth after suffering severe gum disease. However, a new technique should be invented to create a tooth. The technique used by the Japanese scientist would require multiple surgeries which could be dangerous for humans.
