Recently, the Remunerative Project Cell of the MCD was launched in order to crack down on parking mafia and increase the number of parking lots in the city. There is no doubt that MCD was expecting better revenue after this move but it never expected a 100% hike in its revenue.
Experts are of opinion that this has been possible because the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had brought transformational reforms in its parking policies.
The efficacy of these reforms manifests in itself after comparing the revenue of last two years as MCD earned only Rs 61.13 crore in 2009-2010 whereas the Remunerative Project Cell of the MCD earned Rs 122.08 crore this year.
The major responsibilities of RP Cell included looking after the collection of license fee from contracts allotted for operation of parking and collecting one-time charges by the Transport Department of Delhi government on behalf of the MCD.
Some of the officials from MCD also believe that the centralization of parking related work at the headquarters level is the major factor behind the increase in the revenue.
In a statement, an MCD official said, “The Transport Department was persuaded to update revenue collected on account of one-time charges. This all helped increase revenue”.
