Repairing Damaged DNA May Help in Curing Genetic Disorder

On Wednesday, researchers of Rochester Medical Center came up with a unique treatment of treating damaged cells by genetic disorder. It has come to light that hundred of illnesses are caused by genetic disorder.

It has been revealed that genetic disorder is caused when the genetic material called messenger RNA (mRNA) affects the production of vital proteins when a premature "stop" or "codon" signal occurs. When certain cells are damaged stop responding to the genetic instruction.

The researchers of the study has told that they produced normal, healthy proteins in test tubes and in live yeast cells by using short strands of another type of mRNA to correct the faulty ones.

Study author Professor Yi-Tao Yu said, “No one ever imagined that you could alter a stop codon the way we have and allow translation to continue uninterrupted like it was never there in the first place”.

This study is world’s first that has claimed that genetic disorder can be treated by repairing DNA of the patients. It has been reported that more than 8,000 people in Britain suffers from cystic fibrosis, including Gordon Brown's son, Fraser. A further 30,000 people have muscular dystrophy. The researchers are hoping that their findings will help in curing these diseases.
