Doctors at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute have successfully carried out the mixed stem cell therapy on a five-year-old boy, Moinam Pal. The boy was diagnosed with HbE-Beta Thalassemia whne he was only seven months old.
The young boy was given a mixture of cord blood and bone marrow cells collected from the boy's younger sister.
Moinam's father, Ashim Kumar Pal said that their family is extremely delighted with the successful treatment of their son. The doctors told them that Moinam had to undergo regular blood transfusions and medication to keep his red blood cell count at a normal level. His parents took him to NSCB Cancer Research Institute for further treatment.
The Directors of the institute, Ashis Mukherjee advised Moinam’s parents to try for a second baby, whose cord blood cells could be collected and transplanted to his body.
Dr. Mukherjee said that the advice proved successful and the boy was given a mixture of both bone marrow and cord blood cells to increase the chances of his survival. The mixture transplanted on April 3, and the boy started responding to it within 22 days. The cost of entire treatment procedure was about 5 lakh.
