The findings of a latest research has attempted to explore the consequences of home birth and notified that it is an extremely dangerous practice, especially for the first time mothers. In addition, the report has claimed that expecting mothers who prefer to give birth at home are around three times more likely to deliver an unhealthy baby. Such babies tend to die shortly after the birth or suffer a brain damage, in most of the cases.
The report authors have also applauded the benefits of traditional maternity units in hospitals and attempted to highlight their satisfactory and safe levels of services while marking them as a safest place for pregnant women who have their first child.
Before suggesting the findings, the experts have carried out a comprehensive study and observed that in England, the first-time mothers were more than 2.8 times more likely to experience major delivery complications such as death of the child during or soon after birth and injuries to upper arms or shoulders at home as compared to hospital obstetric units.
“This study has shown that first-time mothers wishing to deliver at home have an increased risk for their babies, thus raising questions about the right birth location for this group of women”, added the President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr. Tony Falconer, wjile notifying that referring 36% cent of mothers from a free-standing midwifery unit to obstetric units may cause a number of complications.
An expert from the University College London, who led the study, Professor Peter Brocklehurst, has marked home births as an important issue and expressed disappointment that there is a significant increase in the number of first
-time mothers who are planning to deliver their baby at home. As per reports, in England more than 2.5% mothers had a home birth, during last year alone.
