Gay Sex Is A Disease, Says Azad

Country's health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad stated that homosexuality is an illness, which is spreading its wings in India.

The health minister also told a meeting that gay sex was "abnormal".

However, activists stated that his remarks were "regrettable".

India's Supreme Court legitimized gay sex in India in a landmark verdict during the year 2009.

The decision was accepted gladly by the country's gay society that stated that the order would aid defend them from nuisance and ill-treatment.

The minister also told a meeting on HIV/Aids in the Nation Capital on July 04 that gay sex that was found more in the developed world, has now unluckily entered India and there is a considerable number of such people in the country.

"Even through it [homosexuality] is unnatural, it exists in our country and is now fast spreading, making it tough to detect it," he said.

"With relationships changing, men are having sex with men now. Though it is easy to find women sex workers and educate them on sex, it is a challenge to identify men having sex with men."

Mr. Azad's remarks have been damned by Gay rights activists.

Mr. Anand Grover, United Nation's special rapporteur on health stated, "It's unfortunate, regrettable and totally unacceptable that a minister of his stature... is still insensitive to a vulnerable groups such as MSM [men who have sex with men]."

As per one opinion, over 8% of homosexual males in the country have human immunodeficiency virus, as against to a less than 1% infection rate in the general population.

The 2009 SC ruling reversed a 148-year-old colonial law that called a same-sex connection as an "unnatural crime".
