Local doctors have urged fast food chain McDonald’s to stop marketing junk food to kids as more American children are becoming overweight these days.
Dr. Wayne Altman, a family physician in Arlington and other physicians today at the Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester will jointly launch a national initiative challenging McDonald’s and its competitors to stop marketing junk food to kids. More than 200 physicians of the Boston area have signed a letter to McDonald’s CEO James Skinner asking him to halt its marketing to kids.
Obesity has become very common problem among the kids of the country which can give rise to various long-term diseases. Doctors have asked McDonald’s to retire its clown mascot, Ronald McDonald because it lures more kids to come and eat.
Dr. Alan Meyers, a Paediatrician at Boston Medical Centre who is also participating in the event, said that the national initiative is a part of the program aimed at educating parents about healthy eating. The doctors have also urged the government to be strict on matters related to the marketing of food sold to the kids.
