Cave Story set to launch on Nintendo 3DS

NIS America has said that Cave Story would be released as Cave Story 3D for the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming console.

Ayama, creator of Cave Story, and Tyrone Rodriguez of developer Nicalis will take care of development. There is very little information available about the launch and the release date is not yet available. Published by Nippon Ichi Software, Cave Story 3D will have revamped level design but will retain the gameplay of the original version.

Cave Story, whose free version is available for download on the PC and ports available on WiiWare and DSiWare, has been well received. With the new version on 3DS, the game will have enhanced graphics and the developers have also focused on music so that it retains some of the 8-bit flair heard in the original soundtrack.

"The difference between the original Cave Story and Cave Story 3D is going to be the environments are going to be in full 3D, but we will keep the original style of the game, which is a 2D scrolling action game," said Daisuke Amaya.
