The National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) conducted by the National Centre for Social Research and MRC Human Nutrition Research revealed that more than 90% of adolescent girls are not getting recommended levels of nutrition as fail to get enough fruit and vegetables every day.
Further, over 44% of girls were observed for not having required levels of iron in their diet. To conclude the findings, more than 2,000 adults and children were surveyed about their food habits.
The Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies has expressed serious concern over the results and emphasized on the need of healthy and balanced dietary habits for the teenagers and advised to have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. He also notified that balanced diet can play a role to prevent serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
“Over the last ten years, we have not seen the improvements we should have. That is why the government is using new ways to achieve better results including bringing together key partners in charity and businesses to help people to make healthier choices. This will help us to move further and faster on issues like obesity”, added the Health Minister, Paul Burstow.
