Water Flows On Mars, Say Experts

“This is the single most powerful piece of evidence for liquid water at Mars that has been discovered by the Opportunity rover”, said an expert from the Cornell University, Steve Squyres, who is serving as a Principal Investigator of Opportunity, while appearing for an interview with the American Geophysical Union.

The expert made the statement in response to an announcement made by scientists claiming to acknowledge several evidences to show existence of water on Mars, identified by a well-traveled NASA Mars rover, on Wednesday.

Around eight years back, the Opportunity rover had landed successfully on Mars and acknowledged a very thin bright mineral vein along with Endeavour, rim of a huge crater. After analyzing the attributes, the experts have notified that the mineral resembles gypsum in a number of properties.

The Opportunity, a golf-cart-size rover, along with its twin Spirit has succeeded to land on Mars in January 2004, as an attempt to complete its hunt to identify the signs of various water activities occurred during the ancient era, particularly on the planet that has a popular name “Red Planet”.

After completing a three-year trek, the Opportunity entered the 14-mile-wide Endeavour Crater in August and discovered the mineral vein that is believed around 51 centimeters long with identical thickness of a human thumb.

During the last month, the scientists have properly examined the vein with the help of cameras installed in the Opportunity as well as X-ray spectrometer and marked it as a hydrated form of calcium sulfate. Presently, the material is used in the making of drywall and plaster of Paris.

A rover project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Bruce Banerdt, notified some symptoms of advanced age in the robotic arm joints of Opportunity, identical to shoulder of a person living with arthritics.

New Stem Cells Derived, the Ones With the ‘Best Quality’

It has been recently revealed that there has been the development of a new stem cell by the scientists. These stem cells are grown in the lab and are taken from the human embryos. They are apparently of the best quality so far and can help in further research, towards the end of the next year, and would also be able to be used in clinical trials in the time to come.

It has been revealed that the stem cell trials conducted in the past have used research grading of lower quality. These were actually manipulated to make it the ‘clinical grade’. This time however the grade of stem cells used is the best one and they are of the clinical quality and come right from the patients for trials. This is the reason they can do without conversions. These stem cells are also untouched by the animal bi -products that are usually used for the stimulation of growth by other research teams.

“The key here is that these are clinical grade lines, they have been set up from the beginning as lines that do not contain animal products and have not got animal products coming into contact with them”, revealed Professor Peter Braude, one of the leading authors of the team.

It was further revealed that though such researches may have been done in the past by private drug firms, this is the first time it has been conducted on such a large scale, for the aid of public health.

This research might surely benefit the field of regenerative medicine in many ways. It might surely help scientists in developing newer way of cure and treatment for patients in the future.

NASA Claims To Have Identified a New Planet, Kepler-22b

“This discovery shows that we Homo sapiens are straining our reach into the universe to find planets that remind us of home. We are almost there”, said an expert from the University of California, Geoff Marcy, in an email while briefing about the discovery of a latest planet that resembles earth. In addition, the expert has also tagged it as a phenomenal discovery up till now in history.

Further, the experts have notified that the newly identified planet that has reflected all feasible conditions to support life is located outside the solar system. According to astronomers, the planet is smack in the middle of the Goldilocks zone, a difficult location to be acknowledged easily, although, possessing feasible environmental for life conditions that are not cold or hot, extremely. Scientists have notified that it has 72 degrees temperature, identical to the surface of a shopping mall.

On Monday, the NASA officials have confirmed the discovery of new planet along with other discoveries such as Kepler telescope. The high potential telescope was launched during the planet-hunting mission, observed in 2009.

This is for the first time, when scientists have acknowledged any planet in the inhabitable zone for Kepler. The new planet is named as Kepler-22b and possess some similar features that of earth, although, circles a star identical to sun along with same distance, approximately. Besides environmental conditions, it is believed to have one year of 290 days, very close to the year of earth.

The Kepler Deputy Science Chief, Natalie Batalha, notified that the planet has also displayed some tough conditions such as its size and notified that it is approximately 2.4 times more as compared to the size of earth. Further, the expert has anticipated possibilities that it can support an environment like gas-and-liquid Neptune.

Scientists Claim to have Found World’s Oldest Fish

It has been revealed in a recent report by the researchers from Japan and Australia that they have found the world’s oldest fish.

It was revealed that it has been discovered in the East Timor. The research team is of the view that this throws light on the intelligence and skill of the fishermen, back 42,000 years ago. The new archaeological discovery reveals the expertise of the fishermen

It was revealed by Professor Sue O’ Connor of the Australian National University that there have been as many as 2800 fish that have been caught, all those years back. She further added that this discovery also unravels the excellent cognitive skills that people used to have, in order to be able to make that huge catch.

It reveals that the early man had developed enough ways of survival and good ways of catching fish for themselves .This shows how intelligent man was since the beginning and how he had started planning for a future.

Scientists and archaeologists have found fishes like Tuna, barracudas as well as sharks, in the olden times.

“When I discovered it in 2005, I didn’t think that Jerimalai would tell us about the very early occupation of Timor. I was quite surprised when I found all these fish bones and turtle bones”, revealed Professor ‘Connor.

She further revealed that there has been excavation done on two small pits only so far, but they have found as many as 39,000 bones of fish, together with a number of other precious artifacts like animal remains, fish hooks, shell beads, bone points and so on.

She revealed that these sightings have unearthed the marine profession that had come into existence so many years ago, when man was slowly seeing evolution to become more than just the caveman.

Scientists Discover New Environment for Faster Growth of Stem Cells

Scientists have revealed that they have developed a new and a better way for growing stem cells. The scientists have found a new plastic surface, which would overcome the problems that were related to growing of stem cells. The standard surfaces have proved that the growth of stem cells is limited.

This new discovery was conducted by Glasgow and Southampton Universities. They have reported that this discovery of new surface would help them to create stem cell therapies for re-growing bones and tissues in the body.

In this study, the new plastic surface was created by a manufacturing process, which is similar as that of making Blu-ray discs. This surface is covered with tiny pits that have helped in the growth of stem cells. Due to these tiny pits, the stem cells can grow and spread into useful cells for therapies.

This research was performed by Dr. Matthew Dalby, from the University of Glasgow with colleague Dr. Nikolaj Gadegaard and Prof. Richard Oreffo of the University of Southampton.

“This new nano-structured surface can be used to very effectively culture mesencyhmal stem cells, taken from sources such as bone marrow, which can then be put to use in musculoskeletal, orthopaedic and connective tissues, ” says Dr. Matthew Dalby.
